The Electricians' Turn

Saturday, January 26, 2007
The electricians came today and put new electric outlets in the wall.

We're going to have about twice as many outlets and about twice as many lights as we have now, not to mention a few new windows. Our kitchen will be dazzling with light. The electricians were from South Side Electric, an old local firm that, coincidentally, I worked at one summer when I was in college. The electricians seemed less amazed by this piece of small-worldness than I was. They did not, for example, offer me the Friends and Family Discount, even though I was practically one of them. One of the electricians was a woman, which would have been barely within the realm of possibility when I worked there.
Jim is very pleased because we now have an overhead light in the kitchen, which makes it less likely that we will trip over one of the pieces of plywood covering the now-nonexistent kitchen floor.

Hello, just wanted to write and say I am still enjoying reading your blog...you bring the same humor to home remodeling as you do to baking! I can't wait to see pics of the finished product...I have to say (and I know it would be much different if I were living through it) but it seems like your remodelers are really on top of things...do they have an estimated finish date?

Well, keep us all informed, we can't wait to see what great bread your new kitchen produces!

Hi Stacey,
The "optimistic" finish date is March 30. The optimistic appliance installation date is March 20. I'm hoping to be able to bake my older daughter's birthday (April 11) cake in my new oven!

Hi!
I'm nodding my head at Stacey's comment. I love your writing and am thoroughly enjoying your wry remodeling commentaries! (So much easier to chuckle as the reader!).

I only found your blog recently, so I'm having a ball alternating between reading old bread entries and following your current project.

It was great that you showed us as much detail as you did of the old kitchen. I am so excited to see how it will evolve into something wonderful and how the problems will be solved.

Did the electricians really come on Saturday? !! or do you post the next day?

Can we have a preview ? What's supposed to happen next? or for this week?

Yay! New hardwood floors just after Valentine's Day! Here's to baby steps! I hope you are enjoying eating out at all of your favorite places since you can't cook...and since it is about 2 degrees right now and you have to get out of your torn up house!!

Can't wait to see your daughter's birthday cake...

Marie, Can I send you some food?

Marie said...

Melinda,
Please do. I keep finding new recipes and then realizing that I can't make any of them.

Send address.

Melinda,
I thought you were joking! I must be sounding really pathetic. I'm actually okay--I've borrowed a crockpot from my daughter, and a friend is lending me a toaster oven. But thank you--what a nice offer!

Marie,
I also am enjoying your humorous descriptions of your remodeling project, you really should write a book.
This would have been the perfect time for you and your husband to take another trip to the Carribean, get away from the low temps in your area and the mess in your kitchen.

Kneadtobake,
Yes, sipping on rum drinks in the Caribbean would have been a lovely alternative to wading through snow to come home to a completely trashed kitchen. Maybe we should tell our contractor we've decided not to have the in-floor heating after all and take the money we'd save to fly south.
